De la naissance de la citadelle de Brouage, en 1555, à son déclin historique, avec l’envasement de son port et la création de l’arsenal de Rochefort en 1666, il se passe à peine un siècle, riche en événements : c’est exactement dans l’espace de cette courte apogée que s’inscrit le jeu de paume de Brouage. L’histoire singulière de cet établissement de loisir est étroitement liée à l’explosion du commerce du sel, à la violence des guerres de religion et à l’instauration de l’absolutisme louis-quatorzien.

Hardly a hundred years passed between the foundation of Brouage in 1555 and its decline following the silting up of the old harbour and the creation of the arsenal of Rochefort in 1666. In 1555 a tennis court was built by a wealthy salt merchant. The town and the tennis court developed and prosered with the rapid expansion of salt trade, but they took the brunt of the religious wars between Catholics and Protestants. The 17th century was a period of political stability and of thriving economy with the coming of King Louis XIV to absolute power.
