THE OLD MAN OF THE APOCALYPSE ON THE PORTAL OF THE OLD PARISH CHURCH IN ROCHEFORT

by Alain Dalançon

With the Church authorities, an illustrated rendition of the Apocalypse has always been one of the main sources of religious medieval iconography, in a view to propagating Christian cultural tenets. No wonder, then, that the 24 Old Men who bore witness to this revelation are so often to be found on church portals.
The Old Man once represented on the Notre-Dame church portal in Rochefort belongs to the sophisticated type that had become widespread throughout Western Christian civilization in the course of the 12th century. Together with a variety of plant, bird, or ‘human-chain’ motifs, it provides a link between Christian faith and the imaginary world.
Thanks to the remains displayed in the Archeological Museum as a tentative reconstruction of the old portal with its four archings, one may be able to re-assess the importance of that particular church, that may well have once been a meeting-point for pilgrims on their way to Saint-Jacques de Compostelle.
